Why I Started a Food Blog + How You Can Too

Today I am sharing with you why I create my food blog and exactly how I did it – so you can too! Blogging has allowed me to share the things I love (food, creativity, photography, writing, etc.). It’s the one thing (along with lots of chocolate) that kept my spirits up when times were difficult (yes that’s you Covid) and my mental burn out was real. My single greatest advice for anyone looking for more is to find fulfilment by following your passions. Any and all of them.

Following your passion will be the best thing you’ll ever do, I promise! When you start following your passion, get ready for a beautiful feeling of joy, peace, and happiness. For me, life is a magical adventure when I am staying true to myself and following what I find interest and passion in, which can change depending on the mood or season of my life. For example, I’ve been a bean-to-bar chocolate maker, a nice cream manufacturer and even a koala tracker! I’ve leant to paint, weld, surf, snowboard, and grow my own food. And at the time I’ve loved every moment of these jobs/hobbies/interests.

Photographing food was harder than I thought!

No matter where you are this moment, you too can start doing more of what you love and feeling the joy that comes along with it. My advice: start your journey today.

This blog was created in 2021 as a way to incorporate photography (another long lost passion of mine) with my love of sharing healthy cooking and recipes. I purchased my DSLR camera for my nice cream business, and secretly as a distraction for the serious mental burn out I was facing from running a business. I soon discovered that now I could do a whole lot more that just take photos for Mooloo’s Instagram. I got to work and set up the blog in less than an hour, and immediately started putting up my own recipes to share. I then found that I was getting my creative juices flowing and finding new ways to be creative in the kitchen and with the camera.

The moral of the story, following my interests made me happier! And if you love cooking, writing, photography, arts/crafts or have something else you love and want to share with the world, I recommend starting today! That’s why I started this blog, and if you want, you can start one too.

I’ve detailed below how I started my blog easily and cheaply below for those who are interested. 😊

First things first, Click here to start a blog on WordPress, then follow along below for the easy directions.

Anyone can start a blog for minimal dollars; however, you’ll still need to choose a company to host your site. After a lot of research, I chose Bluehost, as they offered the best value, are known as one of the top hosting companies (2021) and had the most positive reviews.

It cost me just $3.94 AUD a month!!! And if you sign up here, then you will get your domain (name of your site) for free! I highly recommend signing up for the 12-month hosting plan, it’s affordable and will save you money in the long run.

These are the reasons I chose Bluehost for my blog:

  • Bluehost web hosting offers accessible technical support.
  • Bluehost hosting is CHEAP at just $3.94 AUD per month.
  • You get a FREE blog domain for the first year.
  • WordPress through Bluehost is FREE.
  • You will be self-hosted. If you want to appear professional to readers and companies, you want to be self-hosted on Bluehost, rather than being on another platform like Blogspot.

How I did it:

1. I registered my domain name – www.hellomilliemae.com

If you want to start a blog of your own, i suggest You click here to purchase your own domain name, then follow my steps below.

I had to have a serious think about what I wanted my domain name to be. This was tough! I got my domain name with Bluehost for free, which made the whole process very easy.

2. I purchased hosting for the blog.

Setting up a WordPress blog on Bluehost was easy. I followed the prompts and chose the Basic plan as that’s all I really needed for now. You can always change it later to a different plan if you want to and pay the difference.

I unchecked the extras listed before payment also as they were not needed.

  • Go to Bluehost and click the “Get Started Now” button.
  • Click on the package you are interested in.
  • Sign up for your domain name here.
  • Enter your personal and payment information.
  • Next you will be asked to enter a password.

Note: If you already have a domain name you will have to enter some additional details and connect them. It was easier for me to buy my domain directly through Bluehost.

3. I Installed WordPress on Bluehost.

Bluehost makes it very easy to create a WordPress blog and it is FREE.

After I created my password, Bluehost guided me through exactly what I needed to do in order to start a blog. If I ever got stuck, there were loads of tutorials on Youtube!

Bluehost asked me to pick a theme, and there are so many free ones. I clicked on “Start Building” and chose “Personal”. And I now had a blog! I changed the theme several times (all free ones) until I found one that fit and watched more videos on setting up that theme.

I hope this short story inspires you to start following your passion too and just how easy it is to share them with the world.

Remember to stay true to yourself.
